A Grandchild’s Quest for Chicken is an irreverent and surreally offbeat half cardiovascular exercise, and half solo theatre comedy show written and performed by Garvin Chan 陳嘉泓, in which “The Grandchild” journeys to the Chinese afterlife on a nine-step plan to find their grandmother’s spirit in order to learn their grandmother’s 糯米雞 (Chinese chicken dim sum) recipe in a bid for personal redemption.

Throughout this odyssey across this surrealist landscape, The Grandchild is accosted by members of the Chinese pantheon that both hinder and assist them on this quest for this ancestral recipe during which The Grandchild discovers the meaning of kindness and love.

Exploring themes of kindness, duty, and the importance of culture in a modern world, A Grandchild’s Quest for Chicken is an honest, hilarious, and at times breathtaking solo theatre performance accentuated by animated surtitles created by Christian Ching, original folk songs composed by Cindy Kao 高慧欣, and a nearly unrelenting series of jokes.

Oh. And there’s a time limit before Grandmother reincarnates.
