Are you a BC artist producing a new play? Playwrights Theatre Centre (PTC), in collaboration with the Fringe, is now accepting submissions for the 2018 Fringe New Play Prize! The artist with the winning submission will receive eight months of dramaturgy with PTC Project Dramaturg Joanna Garfinkel, free rehearsal space, a free spot in PTC’s how-to-produce theatre seminar series, and a free and guaranteed space on the Fringe Mainstage for the 2018 Festival. With the full package valued at $5,000, the Fringe New Play Prize is a rare opportunity for artists to create new work under experienced mentorship without the financial pressure of a regular production.
The 2017 winners of the Fringe New Play Prize, lee william boudakian, Anoushka Ratnarajah, and Kamee Abrahamian with support from PTC Associate Dramaturg mia amir are producing Setting Bones which will be at the Revue Stage during the 2017 Vancouver Fringe. Their seven month journey to create Setting Bones has brought them from a story about family and culture to one of real life events as they face inter-generational silence and a disappearing history. As Anoushka Ratnarajah describes:
“We started writing this show with the task of creating a fictional family formed out of the shared and differing experiences of our own families and cultures. What started seven months ago has evolved into a piece of theatre that is delving into the whys and hows of the stories we hear and tell about ourselves. It is a show that sits in the silences that may never be filled, because those who carried those stories have left this earth, because the physical and emotional geographies of ‘home’ and ‘origin’ are quickly disappearing because of trauma, war and assimilation.”

You’re in luck! The Vancouver Fringe Festival has officially launched the 2017 Fringe Raffle! This year the Fringe is announcing the first ever Early Bird Draw. This means that when you buy a raffle ticket before 6:00pm on September 7, you’ll double your chances of winning! What prizes, you ask? How does a two-night stay at the Granville Island Hotel during the Festival sound? (It’d go great with a Frequent Fringer Card, right?) Or how about one month’s worth of prepared recipe ingredients delivered right to your door from Fresh Prep? Or a 2017 Fringe Festival Kick Ass Pass which gives you and a guest access to shows at the 2017 Festival? Think you could get down with that? Be sure to buy a ticket and it may even be the winning one! The Early Bird Draw is on September 7 at 8:30pm on Opening Night at the Fringe Bar at Ocean Art Works at 1531 Johnston Street.
Your Early Bird ticket will also be reentered into our Final Raffle! We’re raffling off a nine-day trip to Costa Rica for two from G Adventures with flights from Vancouver included, a Whistler package for two including a four-night stay at the Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa and two 60-minute massages at the Spa at Nita Lake Lodge, and a one-year membership to Float House! The draw will be on September 17 at 9:30pm on Awards Night at Performance Works at 1218 Cartwright Street. You do not have to be present to win—we will contact you if your ticket is drawn!
Tickets may be only sold and purchased in British Columbia.
Ticket purchasers must be 19 years of age or older. If a winning ticket bears a minor’s name, the prize will be lawfully delivered on behalf of the minor parent, legal guardian, or trustee.
Prizes have no equivalent cash value.
