In understanding of various accessibility needs, whether you are neurodiverse, living with disabilities, d/Deaf, hard of hearing, blind, low vision, or have mobility considerations, the Fringe welcomes your interest in volunteering with us!

Please read the following position descriptions before filling in the volunteer application. You will be able to select the positions and shifts that you want based on your preference, accessibility needs, and availability. Due to the public nature of the performance festival we cannot ensure that our events will be scent free, low sensory, or a relaxed performance environment.
The Fringe fosters an inclusive and diverse environment with an established Code of Conduct. Join us and take part in one of the best theatre festivals in town!

Front of House/Customer Service Positions

Venue Captains – Venue Captains are volunteers with strong leadership skills who have volunteered at the Fringe before or have other leadership experience. They coordinate and supervise Front of House activities and ticket sales at Fringe venues. They also supervise Ticket Sellers at various Box Office stations around Granville Island. Venue Captains who are new to the position will be contacted by a Fringe representative for a check in.

This position is accessible to volunteers using wheelchairs (in wheelchair accessible venues), and to those who are partially sighted.

Patron Check-In Attendants – Patron Check-In Attendants will be the first point of contact for arriving guests. They will be checking in patrons via a digital guest list using a tablet, so being comfortable with technology is required. They will also be ensuring all guests have read and understand the Festival Health & Safety Policy before they enter the venue. The ideal Patron Check-In Attendant would have past Venue Captain volunteer experience, but this is not required. All work stations are socially distanced and/or have an engineered barrier.

This position is accessible to volunteers using wheelchairs (in wheelchair accessible venues), and to those who are partially sighted.

Ticket Sellers– Ticket Sellers will sell tickets at shows using a tablet and handle contactless payments. They should be comfortable with technology and multitasking in busy environments. All work stations are socially distanced and/or have an engineered barrier.

Ushers – Ushers will monitor contact tracing and ensure all patrons fill out their contact details before they enter the theatre. They will guide guests to their seats while maintaining social distance. Ushers will also help make sure guests are following the Health & Safety Policy in the venue.

This position is accessible to volunteers who are d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and those using wheelchairs.

Photographers – Photographs are an important and powerful way to document the Festival for current and future Fringers, sponsors, donors, and funders. Volunteers in this role will be given a list of shots to capture on their shift, and will provide their photographs to the Fringe for use in social media, our email newsletters, various print materials, and on our website. You will be credited as photographer wherever your photos are used! You must bring your own camera, and know how to use it!

Technical/Physical Work/Hands-On Positions

Site Crew/Production – It takes hard work to make the Festival look this good. Pick up a hammer and help our production and signage team build venues, paint and install signs, hang banners, and prepare the island for the Fringe – then take it all down again 11 days later! Comfortable, closed-toed shoes and warm clothes required. You might work outside, get dirty, and need to be able to lift stuff. A great choice for people who like being outside and working with their hands!

This position is accessible for volunteers who are d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Fundraising Positions

Events – We have some great Fringe special events this year. Events volunteers help with a variety of tasks including setup and strike, picking up empty bottles, carrying trays, and just generally helping the events run smoothly. Bonus points if you have Food Safe certification or Serving it Right! A great way to make sure you’ve got a ticket to the hottest events of the festival!

Raffle Ticket Sellers – Get ready to have fun! “Get Lucky Raffle” sellers are outgoing, friendly, and unafraid to approach people. Raffle Ticket Sellers will have the chance to chat with fantastic Fringe goers and soak up the festival atmosphere. Raffle Ticket Sellers will be in the centre of the action selling raffle tickets to Fringe goers at Fringe special events! Must be confident using an iPad and talking to people about how great Fringe is!

Administrative/Office Positions

Office – We currently do not have any openings for office volunteers. If you are interested in this position, please let us know and we will be in touch if any opportunities come up. Office volunteers will work remotely to help with various administrative and data entry tasks. They may also be asked to handle patron phone calls. If you’re comfortable around computers and talking on the phone, this is the job for you!
