The Song Collector
Hummingbird Interactive
Back after a nearly sold-out run at the 2025 Vancouver Fringe! The Song Collector is an immersive video-based theatrical installation, inspired by folk song collector Lucy Broadwood. Step inside Lucy’s room, where you are welcome to browse her collection – and add to it.
Lucy Broadwood (1858-1929)’s story is unique, because it’s not just about music. As an upper class unmarried woman, she was an exception and way ahead of her time. Through playing the organ in her local church, she got to meet the local working men and persuaded them to share their songs with her. She collected many folk songs, songs about love, work, politics and desire. Songs that were shared within communities, thus storing their collective memories. What’s your song memory?
The Song Collector is a 30-minute-long site-specific show for maximum of 4 people at a time. 'Little Gem of a Show' - 'Utterly Unique'."

'Through a gentle 30 minutes of video story and sound in a very intimate environment, I was reminded of my earliest memories of song, and how music anchors and connects us to one another and our sense of who we are in the world. As part of a tiny audience, I was invited to be part of the story. After the show, I had a song in my pocket, a few fellow song-lovers I can say hello to, and and a warm, musical light in my heart.'
