Josina’s been in three triathlons starting when she was 63 and continues to swim every day on Haida Gwaii.

There’s no pools there and she swims in the rivers, lakes, or ocean. She likes learning new things but did not expect to be swimming in a triathlon as a nonathletic non-swimmer. Josina didn’t think she’d be swimming at all let alone every day. She was a skinny kid who got cold easily and never liked putting her head in the water. She took lessons but after she learned to swim and dive she basically just did side stroke or breaststroke so she wouldn’t have to dunk. She would play in the water. COVID changed that. Daily cold-water swims are part of her life now and her mental health plan.
