Burn Blue
Jill Goranson & Kelsi James
Don’t look elsewhere. Take that breath and look around.
Don’t look elsewhere. Find the sea, and find the ground.
You’re not elsewhere, you can’t make it not pertain to you.
Don’t look elsewhere, while we burn blue.
Burn Blue is a devised, interdisciplinary show about the ocean, Vancouver stream restoration, and the politicization of water. Created by a group of friends working across the mediums of theatre, dance, music, design, and comedy, its devising materials include:
•News articles on Vancouver’s recent action plans towards stream restoration (“daylighting”)
•City of Vancouver’s 2026 water restriction guidelines
•Verbatim text from park-side interviews at Tatlow Park
•Sounds collected from the shoreline between Kits and Jericho beaches
– and oceanside footage by Spencer Browne + music Jill Goranson and Kelsi James created in 2021, when Burn Blue was a song cycle commissioned by Diva Day for their Flow Fest.
Expect rigorous physical theatre, rich soundscapes, music sung in multi-part harmony, and text tied directly to so-called Vancouver.
Take your feet down to the shore,
Plant your toes on the ocean floor,
Take a breath,
And then take one more.
Burn Blue is co-stewarded by Jill Goranson and Kelsi James, and co-created in community with friends. Follow @kelsilindajames and @jillgoranson for most updated show credits and information.
