Appi-Teasers!
David Gaines in 7(x1) Samurai is performing a preview during our Opening Night! |
The Fringe is back! And we’re starting the “All You Can Eat Theatre” season with a night of Appi-Teasers! Come out to taste test a few of our performers before the main course begins! Hosted by the indomitable David C. Jones, we’ll be featuring nine of the 83 shows this year:
We’ll also be holding a Live and Silent Auction! Sundance Guest Ranch is once again offering up a two night stay for two and the stylists at Rain Boutique and Salon are donating approximately $2,000 in services! To see more of what’s on offer during our Auction, click here.
On top of all that, we’ll get tasty finger foods from Dockside Restaurant, the Keg, and Cats Social House, and wine sampling from Ganton and Larsen Prospect Winery! Yum yum!
There will be a preview of Pretending Things Are A Cock during the Opening Night! |

Tasty Treats
Our food theme continues with food stories from our artists! Shauna Johannesen, the writer/actor/producer behind Deadley: A Ridiculous Medley of Scenes about Death shares the source of her frugal nature with us.:

Waste Not, Want Not.
I grew up in a community of Dutch immigrants who save everything and waste nothing and pride themselves on being good stewards of their resources. I once found Old Mrs. Vandekraats (you know you belong to a certain type of community when someone needs the preface “old” to separate her from the other Mrs. Vandekraatses) slipping through the after-church coffee crowd collecting used muffin wrappers from empty cookie tins. When I asked her why she didn’t just get new ones for 69 cents at Safeway she looked me square in the eye and said, “You never lived through the depression.” I did not.
But I did inherit an almost maniacal approach to free food. In fact, I feel it’s my duty to take advantage of any and all free food-hunger, quality, and convenience notwithstanding. I have attended Friday afternoon lectures in languages I don’t understand because beer and cheese was promised. I went as someone’s date to an International Trade Union Convention under the lure of mini-shish kebabs and lemon squares alone. I have feigned interest in environmental clubs for free pizza. Some say the Dutch are cheap. I say, nature applauds the resourceful. See you at Costco.
Fringe Marketing for Dummies
Our Sandwich Board Forest and Buzz Boards are tools for "guerilla marketing." Photo by Brice Ferre. |
Rebecca Coleman, the theatre publicist behind The Art of the Business, a blog with marketing tips for artists, (especially theatre artists), has written two posts (this one and this one) for Fringe artists on how to promote themselves! It’s super informative for artists, but it’s also helpful for those of you who just don’t know what to see at the Fringe this year!
The posts will give you the inside scoop on how the actors and producers will try to grab your attention, including notes on everything from using Facebook to flyering lineups! And be sure to read the comments too! Brian M. Carroll commented that he has a rule when he’s approached by Fringe artists: “I don’t accept a flyer until [they] tell me: WHY do I WANT to see YOUR show?” We propose you ask artists the same question!
Rebecca also recently posted an interview with our Executive Director, David Jordan, about the State of the Fringe. They talked about the Fringe, David’s theatre background, and the arts cuts.
More Billeters and More Volunteers!

If you've got spare bunk beds and no cats, we need you.
We’re still looking for more volunteer hosts to billet Fringe artists, especially for hosts who can host two or moreartists, and those of you who do not have pets. If you’d like to learn more, click here.
And a few more volunteers couldn’t hurt either! Whether you’re new to the Fringe or returning, you need to fill out our online application.
