mister kinski’s CABARET OF BULLSHIT and the Grey Campaign
Flashlights and political satire were the de riguer of the Cabaret of Bullshit that was held last Saturday, Sept. 19 at Performance Works. Many Fringe artists performed at the cabaret including Jem Rolls, Becky Poole, Lana Schwarcz, Jonno Katz, Eric Davis, and many, many more, all for the sake of raising funds for the Vancouver Fringe Festival.
Performers were lit by nothing more than the flashlights audience members brought into the blacked out room. Lights flashed from one corner to the other as performances randomly began with artists standing on tables in the centre, on chairs in each cranny, and on the main stage.
The evening culminated with Eric Davis portraying Gordon Campbell participating in an art installation on the seven plagues of Egypt. He was attacked by French speaking “frogs,” covered in menstrual blood and teenage puss, raped by beasts, pummeled with marshmallow hail, has his clothes ripped off by locusts, and finally, he was castrated to represent the death of his first born!
It was such an amazing fundraiser that we’re going to try and do it again next year! And in addition to raising funds for the Fringe, the Cabaret also brought awareness to the drastic 80% cut the Provincial government plans on making to the arts. But there’s still time to write to Gordon Campbell (at premier@gov.bc.ca) and your MLAs. The budget is not being finalized until early November, so please take the time and let your representatives know that you disagree with these cuts. If enough of us take a stand, they have to listen.
Fringe Flashback
The “f” Word
Presented by Full Figured Theatre, the “f” in The “f” Word stood for feminism. The show told the story of three typical feminist types: a hippie, a corporate business woman, and a political activist, and their different understanding of what feminism is. We’d like to be a little bit selfish and think that the “f” stands for FRINGE!
