Breaking All the Fringe Records!

This Fringe Broke Records!!

Wow… It’s already over! Let’s all give ourselves a round of applause! We made it through 11 jam-packed days of 700+ performances… and we had great fun “feeling it all!” We want to thank all 35,000+ attendees for breaking our (ticketed) attendance record and contributing to the highest revenues to artists ever (over a quarter of a million dollars)! We invite you to stick around for the holdover events we have coming up! Also, we have to give a huge shout out to the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar musicians and DJs who had us singing, dancing, and swaying as we sipped away on marvelous beverages.

Of course David has to steal the spotlight away from our Pick of the Fringe Winners. Photo by Ariane Lapointe-Auger.

We closed the Festival with Awards Night, where we gave special recognition to some of the outstanding shows from this year’s Festival. For example, Falling Awake by RAGMOP Theatre was awarded the Joanna Maratta Award and the Mollie Bradley Award . Check out the full list of Fringe Awards winners as well as our Raffle winners! The winners of the Public Market Pick of the Fringe are listed below so keep reading!!

Many thanks to all the artists, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and again, the attendees for making the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival as great as it was! The Fringe staff appreciates your fantastic efforts in upholding the Fringe’s Vision of “theatre for everyone!”

Announcing the 2016 Public Market Pick of the Fringe!

Vancouver just can’t get enough Fringe Theatre—that’s why there are Fringe holdovers after the Festival! From September 21 through 25, the Public Market Pick of the Fringe will be held at a new venue this year, Performance Works on Granville Island.

Pick shows got people talking in lineups, at the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar, and online—and they received rave reviews—so we just have to bring them back for another performance!

And without further ado, the Public Market Pick of the Fringe winners are:

And Bella Sang With Us

Travis Bernhardt, creator of the award winning magic shows Unpossible! and Lies!, returns to tell fortunes, lift curses, and speak to the dead.
“Watching Charlatan! is a lot like using a Ouija board when you’re a teenager. Times about 10,000. What he does is jaw-dropping.”

—Colin Thomas, the Georgia Straight

And Bella Sang With Us

And Bella Sang With Us

Set in 1912 and inspired by Vancouver’s first women police officers, And Bella Sang With Us asks: Can two Constables save a woman from a life on the streets? Will they find their way in a police department driven by men? Will running after criminals while wearing floor-length skirts ever get easier?
“Extremely polished and a decided cut above the usual Fringe fare.”

The After After Party

The After After Party

Jules and Fiona make their own party because they’re never invited to the real party. The After After Party explores the ruthlessness of high school politics, the all-consuming need to be liked, and above all, friendship.
“I called Hoffman and Mabberley comedy goddesses back in 2014. I am even more in awe of their skills in this new iteration. The best of the fest.”

Curious Contagious

Curious Contagious

A surreal quest into the microscopic innards of a mythical beast. Funny, beautiful, and strange with handmade layered projections and an original musical soundtrack.
“A trippy experience that’s full of witty flourishes ... there’s no denying the skill at work in this epic, microscopic adventure.”

—Kathleen Oliver, the Georgia Straight

Sink or Swim

Brimming with songs and stories that vividly reveal all the fears and foibles of five-year-old “Smelly Elliott” a.k.a. Beverley Elliott, known by her fans around the world for her recurring role as “Granny” on ABC’s hit series, Once Upon a Time.
“A charmer. Full of warmth and humour ... these are evocative tales and songs with wonderful lyrics.”

Carry On: A Musical

Carry On: A Musical

Set in the YVR baggage claim, Carry On: A Musical examines the convergent lives of weary wanderers and the baggage they bring with them.

More Fringe Just For You!

They’re baaaaaack!! Pick Plus returns September 22-25 with a series of Fringe hits! All of the shows featured in the Pick Plus are popular Fringe acts from the past or from other Fringe Fests, and handpicked for your pleasure. It’s the perfect solution for those who crave more Fringe!

In a hilarious show considered more of a tribute than a parody, One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody of Love, Friendships and Shoes goes through all six seasons of Carrie’s love life. What else would you expect from the “Fringe god” TJ Dawe and the amazingly talented Kerry Ipema? Kerry’s performances seem to cause reviewers to say only great things, including this review from CBC: “The whole enterprise is created by one woman’s voice and gestures. Sex and the City was always a guilty pleasure but this funny show can be savoured with head held high.”

One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody of Love, Friendships and Shoes is on September 22 and September 23. Both shows will start at 6:45pm at Performance Works.

Peter n’ Chris has won not one, not two, but three Canadian Comedy Awards—and they’ll be bringing their comedic chops to Pick Plus with their new show, Peter vs Chris! This comedy duo has built one of the most impressive Fringe resumes you will find with a total of 12 awards from Fringe Festivals across Canada, and three awards from the Vancouver Fringe Festival (including the Public Market Pick of the Fringe in 2015). Do not miss these two fellas who the Globe and Mail dubs “comedy legends.”

Peter vs Chris is on September 23 at 8:45pm and September 24 at 5:00pm at Performance Works.

Want more Pick Plus? The New Conformity and God is a Scottish Drag Queen IV, both on September 25, are part of the line up too! Click here for more details.

There are many places one could go to find what is being said about Fringe shows. Of course, we very much appreciate the reviews from the Georgia Straight, Entertainment Vancouver, and Vancouver Observer, among others, but it’s great when Fringe artists get to see and hear high praise from their fans! Thanks to Thunderbolt Sign, we have Buzz Boards set up around Granville Island so that anyone can write their Fringe feedback for all to see!

Our Buzz Boards have held up perfectly despite some rainy days, which is a big testament to the quality from Thunderbolt Sign. They can create all types of signs that you could want for your event including banners, flags, and more… all using the latest technologies! Here’s a short excerpt from their website describing the service they provide:

“We are with you from the first step of branding to the end— to guarantee the dramatic impact of each exposure. So your information stands out.”
