Celebrating the Best of the Fest!

The 2016 Fringe Awards Night was held on Sunday September 18 at Performance Works. Entry was by donation to our friends at PAL (Performing Arts Lodge) Vancouver. The show was hosted by local comedian and Fringe artist Morgan Brayton. Lots of fun was had by all, and here are the winners of the night!

Cultchivating the Fringe Award

Winner: The After After Party

Joanna Maratta Award

Honouring those who best exhibit the original founding spirit of the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Winner: RAGMOP Theatre (Falling Awake)

The Georgia Straight Critics’ Choice Awardtheorbweaver_5x5_inch

Colin Thomas and Kathleen Oliver, the Georgia Straight’s theatre critics, will surrender to the mighty onslaught of Fringe talent, nominate five of the most outstanding shows, and select a winner!

Winners: The After After Party and The Orbweaver: A Dark and Twisted Folktale About a Mildly Farfetched, Highley Illegal Immigration Across Metaphysical Borders 

The Fringe New Play Award

Playwrights Theatre Centre joins the Fringe in offering dramaturgy for the winning script and a guaranteed Mainstage spot in the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival!

Winner: Deneh’Cho Thompson (The Girl Who Was Raised by Wolverine)

For the artist with the best potential for touring in BC. The winner gets mentorship, marketing support, and the chance to showcase their work at Pacific Contact, BC Touring Council’s annual tradeshow and booking conference for the performing arts.

Winner: Hip.Bang! (Hip.Bang! Improv and Hip.Bang! Presents the History of Romance)

NEW! Mollie Bradley Award

Selected by jury, this new award honours the memory of Fringe Board member, Jim Sibley’s mother-in-law. This cash award supports either the winner of the Joanna Maratta Award or the BC Touring Council Award by providing financial help for travel, marketing, and other professional development of one or both award winners.

Winner: RAGMOP Theatre (Falling Awake)

Artistic Risk Awardnerdfucker_2000

The Vancouver Fringe’s Board of Directors awards this prize for risk-taking in Fringe theatre to the artist or group of artists who best pushes the boundaries of theatre.

Winner: Cameryn Moore (Nerdfucker)
2nd Place: Mind of a Snail (Curious Contagious)
3rd Place: Michelle/Ryan (“Ze”: Queer as Fuck!)
